What makes the game of backgammon a sport
The classic board game of backgammon has transcended from the game status to the sport status mainly because that players started to respect both themselves and the game at the same time.
I’m sure that we are all familiar with the popular game of backgammon and by now more than 70 percent of the global population has already learned the basic rules. Considering they are not very hard to follow, even small children are able to fully comprehend the logic behind the game. If this is so, what makes that game so addicting and why has it gained the hearts of millions of people all around the Globe?
Once the game has succeeded into obtaining so much popularity, people have started to compete for a winning title; the backgammon board game has turned into something more than just a game with a board and a dice. This is the point when the game turned into a sport, because players learned to also respect their opponents for their value and not for their luck. Once the game has been studied thoroughly, multiple gaming strategies have been developed in an attempt to maximize the winning potential of the player. This new turn of events made people to look at the game differently, treating it less as a game and more as a sport.
The very definition of a sport is a competition where two or more players are engaged in a match for the purpose of winning through both luck and skills. This way, the game of backgammon has been elevated to a new state, gaining a new value into the eyes of the beholder. Just like in tennis or a full contact game, the backgammon game requires the same amount of respect from both of the players to the game play style and the skills of their opponent.
No matter of the location or the weather conditions where the game is being played, the final result is ultimately the same; one of the two players has to lose and at the same time he must accept that although he has lost the current game, the next one could be his.
The sport of backgammon implies that both parties involved in the match are willing to play by following the rules to the letter and at the end of the game congratulate each other for their performance. Even though at some times it might be difficult for the party that lost to accept defeat, being a sport about it and accepting your defeat with dignity is what separates you from an amateur. This is a commonly know rule that has been applied to every sport and has been known as a gentleman thing to do.
